Versailles is gorgeous.

I really don’t know how else to put it.

If you go to Paris, you absolutely must take the time to visit this place that’s quite easy to get to.

From Paris take the RER C to Versailles Rive Gauche. This station is in the metro’s zone 4 and should cost you 4,10€ each way or 8,20€ for a round trip (unless the prices have changed since July 2013). If the ticket agent asks you “aller rétour?” they’ll be asking you whether you want a return ticket so just say “oui!” which means “yes!”

Once you arrive at the Versailles Rive Gauche station it’s a close walk to the palace: take an immediate right out of the station and then take the first left at Av. de Paris (the first major intersection) and you’ll be able to see it.

Since we got there later in the afternoon we decided to just stick to the gardens since it was free :)

It’s only free at certain times of the year though so do your research before you go!

After indulging in some chocolat chaud we walked into the gardens and were amazed to discover how empty they were!

So began the photoshoot…

There were many, many more taken but these are my favorites :)

Jen had studied classics in her undergrad and was able to name almost all of the statues scattered around the gardens.

No audio guides needed!

This had been my second visit to the gardens and I was still just as amazed as the first time.

Something I hadn’t previously done was take a row boat out on the Grand Canal,

and when we found out that despite the gardens being closed to newcomers we could still rent one out,

it was a done deal.

For 11€ we got one for 30 minutes and had an absolute blast, to understate it :)

I could not recommend this more!

I guarantee you’ll leave Versailles feeling a little more fabulous,

and perhaps a little spoiled :)

Have you ever been? Tell me about your visit!

ps. I hope you had a wonderful & happy holiday!!!

  • Hi Lauren, I recently found your blog & am very much enamored! I venture down to LA every now and then, so those posts are always fun to read. And I’m leaving on Sunday for Europe! I’ll be doing London/Paris/Rome for a week with my family, and then studying at Oxford for three months. So obviously, I’ve been stalking all of your European travel posts – this one was so gorgeous and wonderful to read! :)

Wow, Versailles truly looks fantastic! Awesome photos. Super bummed I didn’t get a chance to go when I was in Paris last summer :( Hopefully at some point in the future though!

  • Heather says:

I went to Versailles in October and did a bike tour around the gardens. I think it was my favorite thing I did in my entire 1 month Eurotrip. Loved this post and you’re definitely making me feel the need to be back in France immediately.

Tell me things.

What’s this?
